The sweet, delicious smell of bread is wafting into my office tonight as I write because I thought that homemade pizza sounded incredibly good..... but not for me. It's actually for Foyle! I know it sounds ridiculous but I think a lot of you would do the same thing for your sick dog(s), and I am out of options on what would entice Foyle to actually eat more than a few pieces of bread or a pancake! Thus, the pizza dough. We've been incredibly lucky to have slowed down the progression of Foyle's kidney disease but this past week he has stopped wanting to eat and been very mopey so I know his kidneys are "re-setting" as we define it, or "getting worse" as defined by everyone else.
We brought home some leftovers from a dinner party at a friend's house last night and he immediately honed in on the pizza box, almost grabbing it out of our hands, so I thought "what the heck!", maybe he'll eat pizza loaded with vegetables! Not exactly the diet that the vet recommends but he stopped eating the dry and canned prescription food after his surgeries (thank you antibiotics) and now won't touch the homemade diet that U.C. Davis prescribed for him. So, we're down to finding anything relatively low protein that he will still want to eat.
So I'm curious to know if anyone has a family member that has kidney disease or needs to limit their protein and what recipes they've found helpful. (chicken makes him incredibly sick so that narrows it down quite a bit) I've found a few sites and I'll be trying out a few new recipes this week, but I would love to have more available! Would you go to this extreme for your dog also or am I just crazy now?
Oh...there goes the beep. The dough is done!
