Seriously. My dogs eat better than I do. I used to think it was funny, I used to think that I was being a good dog mom, we used to laugh about it with our friends...but it isn't very funny any more. The last time we were at a party and the Mr. said that the dogs eat better than he does it really made me think twice about why I am putting more effort into making sure the four of them ate well yet we were still eating processed food and too many carbohydrates every day. Are you guilty of this also? Where were my omegas and roasted vegetables? (that second picture on top wasn't for us, it was for Foyle). Why didn't I save half of that bowl of broccoli for us? Pathetic, really and truly pathetic.
Well, that changed for us when I listened to a NPR interview with Dr. Andrew Weil on his anti-inflammatory diet and his new cookbook, True Food. He has developed a revised food pyramid that focuses on fruits, vegetables, and grains that help to reduce the risk of illnesses like cancer and heart disease. Little did I know that the Mr. was listening to the exact same interview (which unfortunately I can't seem to find a link for) in a different car at the same time. I think it was a sign. Shortly after that I found out that the cooking channel has a new program called The Food Channel that shows how a healthier diet can help minimize or eliminate health issues. It's a food revolution!
We've seen the success that integrative medicine has had on Foyle between his diet, acupuncture, herbs, and western medicine and we've actually been able to keep him alive much longer than we thought. So, we've started on our own mission by trying out recipes from the books True Food, Power Foods, and Meatless to increase our consumption of vegetables and I have to say that these are some tasty recipes! Our favorite so far is the Chicken Farro Salad. It's so easy to make, one that you can put together quickly after a long day at work. Double the dressing because it is so light and yummy, you'll want to use it again and again.
So, we're moving ahead and hopefully we're eating just as well as our dogs but just in case do you think it would hurt if I shared their cod liver oil? Just kidding, I have my own.
