I'm sure you can guess the reason why Foyle's has a metronome of slobber hanging off his jowls today! It's National Donut Day! Foyle's favorite holiday since we discovered a few months ago that he has a particular fancy for powdered donuts from Trader Joe's. When given the option of bread or doughnut holes Foyle went right for the holes- he definitely shares Nooner's sweet tooth!
(Before doughnut hole on left, after about 3 seconds on the right)
National Doughnut Day was started by the Salvation Army in 1938 to raise funds for the Great Depression and to honor the female volunteers, or "lassies", who served doughnuts and hot meals to the soldiers during WW1. To honor this tradition most major doughnut chains are offering free doughnuts today until they run out (sorry! I know this is late but remember June 7th for next year!), and Entenmann's is donating $1 to the Salvation Army for every Facebook like through June 15th! Ya! Considering the tornado damage done in Oklahoma I'm sure the Salvation Army can use all the help they can get to support those families, not to mention the building collapse in Philadelphia!
So what is your favorite doughnut? I'm torn, it's between a chocolate cream filled and a bear claw....or maybe the apple fritter. Mmmmm, how about all three?
