We keep having a reoccurring problem with Ernie in that his stomach randomly fills up with gas every now and then and we're not exactly sure why it is happening. The photo on the left was from Saturday around 4:00 in the afternoon and the photo on the right was about 4 hours later. Luckily I found him in the backyard and brought him inside otherwise he would have sat out in the sun not being able to move! Yikes! When it happened the first time we took him to the ER and after an overnight stay the vets weren't exactly sure what was causing the gas to build up, and since then we've learned that it eventually will dissipate on its own so it's basically a waiting game.
But Saturday night it was incredibly painful for him and he was throwing up any water he drank and crying each time he threw up. The pressure kept building so we headed down to the ER once again but wouldn't you know it by the time we were seen and he was checked out the gas had dissipated and he was fine.
So I'm curious if anyone else has a dachshund or small dog that has experienced this issue? If it was a large dog I would say bloat, but this goes away eventually. The vet recommended Gas-Ex for babies and to keep him moving to see if it would dislodge the bubble or whatever is blocking the way. A few Instagram followers gave some great advice regarding coprophagy which is what I personally think might be causing it, but I can't link it since I'm not sure exactly what he eats right before it happens.
I'm open to any ideas or suggestions! This is really painful for him and at best incredibly uncomfortable if it is a minor occurrence.
