Let me tell you that people in Las Vegas really know how to throw a party, and the Las Vegas Hot-Diggity Dachshund Club & Rescue threw one amazing Hallowiener party last Saturday to help support their club! I was so thrilled to be asked to photograph the event and I was so excited to see all the amazing costume ideas that people had come up with for their dachshunds! I've been scanning the web ever since looking for some of my own this year so I can dress up my hounds and join in on the fun too, but I just can't make up my mind because they all pale in comparison to what I saw in Vegas. Go figure! The Hallowiener event is the club's largest fund raiser of the year but after talking to a few of the members I found out that they also have a Spring Fling, a Wiener Wonderland parade, monthly play dates, as well as many other events for their members. The LVHDDCR is one of the most active breed clubs I've ever seen!
It was fun to stroll through all the booths that came out to support the club like Vegas Rock Dog, and luckily I had my camera in my hand instead of my wallet or else I would have gotten myself into a lot of trouble! One of the perks was that I got a chance to see my first dachshund race! We've been meaning to go to the ones at Golden Gate Fields in Albany, but always manage to miss it by a day, so to finally see them was just hilarious. You don't think of those short little legs as being fast but I barely had time to focus before they were zipping right past me to the finish line. Well, those that didn't turn back around and head in the wrong direction which made it even more hilarious to watch.
And now for the costumes!
You know you just can't be subtle when you are in Vegas and I for one am so glad because these costumes were unbelievable! Entire families dressed up for the contest and the themes ran from Ninja Turtles, and Cinderella (complete with her own carriage by the way) to a giraffe duo, to a nurse! My favorite was Rocky and his Superman costume because the cape flew up in the air every time he ran down the hill, and this big guy kept running and running despite the heat. But I really do applaud all the effort that went into making the costumes and the winners truly deserved that ribbon at the end!
The bonus for me was just getting a chance to photograph so many cute dogs, regardless if they were dachshunds or not, and to get a chance to make some new friends. Many of these dogs were adopted or rescued locally and it was such a great feeling to know that they are in such wonderful homes with amazing pet parents who obviously adore them! A happy ending is all you can ask for and these dogs were definitely having a great time!
I'm so grateful for the chance to meet everyone at the event and hear their stories about their dachshunds. It's nice to see such a strong, committed community that gathers together to support such a wonderful breed; I know from my own experience how sweet, stubborn, and smart dachshunds can be and it's heartwarming to know that we'll all here for each other and to learn how much the LVHDDRC does for the rescues that they adopt into their hearts! I had a wonderful time and I hope to be back next year to say "hi" to everyone again!
