Happy Birthday to Ernie! I know he doesn't look it but he actually turned 17 last week! That's right, he's 17 years old if you can believe it! He's definitely slowed down in the past year, and despite a few health problems that have been getting better with medication, he still trots around the house and barks every night to let us know that we're late with his 8:00 treat! We adopted Ernie when he was 4 years old from a wonderful breeder and he was so gentle and sweet that we couldn't believe anyone would give him up. I still remember the day we picked him up, he came running out of the garage and right up to us with his tail wagging and a smile on his face! He slept with us the first night and every night since then up until earlier this year. I think he's having trouble getting up and down the ramp so we've made a comfortable bed for him next to ours and he seems content to snuggle into the blanket or cool off when he gets too hot. But he keeps hanging in there and we're lucky to see him wake up every morning and make it known that he wants his breakfast as soon as possible! All he wants really is to be next to us and we oblige his every whim at this point, and at 17 he's certainly deserved it!
To celebrate his birthday we took him out for a special night hanging out with friends at the Westbrae Biergarten in Berkeley which we heard was a dog friendly outdoor eatery/garden. Ernie enjoyed his outing alone and kicked back on everyone's lap enjoying any bite of food that he could beg out of someone's hand. He may not see or hear very well but he can definitely smell any minute morsel of food that anyone may have available!
He was looking very dapper in his new tie from Vegas Rock Dog that my friend Sam generously gave me during the Hallowiener event in Las Vegas last month. I thought it would be the perfect time to try it out and he received so many compliments and smiles that it may just become his signature look! What do you think?
The Biergarten is very dog and kid friendly, and with plenty of seating and a play area I can see why it is a local favorite! Not to mention the beer and the food, you have to try the Seasoned Fries and the pretzels because those are definitely tasty, and all the food is locally made! Ernie especially enjoyed the pretzels and literally grabbed it out of my hand. At least we can say he still has a good appetite and to me that is a great sign that he'll stick around for a while longer. So cheers for Ernie! The best little dachshund we could ever ask for!
