The best part about attending the Hair of the Dog photography workshop in Napa is that I can go back up there any time I want to practice and try out some of the same techniques that Nicole taught me at the same locations to see if I can make it work on my own. Over Christmas I corralled my friend Abby and her big girl, Lola, into meeting me early one morning for a session, and let's face it, it was a great excuse to kick back and have lunch as well!
I used some of the same backgrounds and buildings from the workshop to get into the swing of the shoot but soon found all these others locations to play off of. Lola has darker fur so the settings and contrasts were quite a bit different from the Lab, but that was half the fun! Lola had fun as long as there were treats available and we definitely used those to our advantage! She's a sweet, older girl that apparently doesn't smile too often so I'm glad that we were able to capture a few grins when we could. As we were walking next to the river I noticed a tall bottle sculpture at one of the restaurants so we used that to get a really unique background; I thought the light coming through the bottles really complimented the tan in her face and pulled out some of the browns in her fur.
After we exhausted the downtown area we decided to grab a bite to eat at Downtown Joes Brewery & Restaurant and I have to say that the service was incredible! We had two waiters that were doting over Lola, constantly bringing her water and made sure our own drinks were constantly full! The food was incredible and the Raspberry Blonde Ale was pretty refreshing. Great place to go when your cruising around downtown, and it's right on the water so you can get a cool breeze coming through in the summers. All in all not a bad vacation day, not bad at all!
