Last weekend we took off in the wee morning hours to head up north to Folsom Lake to hang out with the big dogs and to see if the dachshunds liked swimming. Believe it or not we've never taken the Dachshunds swimming, mainly because there aren't very many safe or legal places for small dogs to swim and none of our friends have pools.
We suited up with Outward Hound's pet life jackets (found here) which surprisingly fit the dogs really well. If you have a skinny Dachshund then the X-Small might work better, but as long as you tighten up the straps the small worked pretty well for our minis.
Hazel jumped right into the water and luckily (for us, not for the state of CA) the water level was shallow and they could ease their way in without a drastic drop off or surprise! Nooner wasn't so crazy about swimming but went in as long as there was food involved, and Cody did not like it at all. He preferred to run all over the beach and go and visit other set ups to say "hi"!
Of course I couldn't resist a few Newfoundland pictures during their water training session, they are just too much fun to shoot! Mackenzie in the upper left, lower right, is a spitfire at 9 months old and just wanted to play and have fun. Gabe in the upper right, and lower left, absolutely loves, loves, loves to work and would bark the entire time on the boat just waiting to be able to jump off. Gabe already is a Water Rescue Dog and is going for the highest level of WRDX in the fall.
Here's Mackenzie again looking very proud, and getting a little help from dad in holding the rope in her mouth. She prefers dropping to the ground and chewing on it vs. taking it into the water but she is still young and learning more every week. We had so much fun running around with the big dogs and hopefully there's still some water in the lake next time we go back!
